Sachertorte is a chocolate cake invented by confectioner Franz Sacher for Prince Klemens von Metternich on July 9, 1832 in Vienna, Austria.
The invention of Sachertorte dates back to the Restoration period, when the Austrian Chancellor Klemens von Metternich was employed by the apprentice pastry chef Franz Sacher, who particularly loved chocolate and due to a sudden illness of the head chef, the young man made it as a dessert of an official lunch.
